Frequently asked questions:

Q. Do I need to continue seeing my dentist while I have braces on?

A. Because dental hygiene is so important, regular visits to the family dentist must continue every six months during orthodontic treatment (or more often, if recommended). Remember that successful orthodontic treatment is the result of a partnership. The orthodontist, family dentist, and a cooperative patient all work together to create a healthy, beautiful smile that’s good for life.

Q. How long does Orthodontic treatment take?

A. Generally, full orthodontic treatment takes about eighteen to twenty-four months for a typical case. It will take longer with a complicated case or if you do not follow the orthodontist’s instructions. If interceptive treatment is indicated, or Phase 1, it usually takes about twelve months.

Q. Can I still play sports?

A. Yes, you can play sports if you have braces. We will provide a special mouth guard to wear during treatment.

Q. Can I play musical instruments, like the trumpet?

A. Be sure to mention to Dr. Emrich your musical abilities or interest. Depending on the correction needed, certain instruments may need to be avoided. We supply special orthodontic wax to help protect the lips while you adjust to playing with the braces.

Q. Are there foods I cannot eat with braces?

A. There are certain foods that can damage the braces and prolong the treatment time. Foods and candy that are hard or sticky should be avoided. You will also need to cut certain foods into small bites, like apples, so you do not cause the braces to come loose.

Q. Do I brush the same way?

A. We will provide special orthodontic toothbrushes during treatment. You will be instructed how to brush when the braces are placed. We give very detailed brushing steps and ask you to brush four to five times a day. Brushing often and with the right technique is very important to ensure a beautiful, healthy smile when treatment is complete.

Q. Should I do anything special during my first week in braces?

A. Your teeth may be a little tender for several days after the braces are placed. Eating softer foods is recommended and Advil or Tylenol can help with any discomfort. Special orthodontic wax can be applied to the braces while you are adjusting to them.

Q. How often do I go to the orthodontist for adjustments?

A. Most appointments are scheduled every four to eight weeks.
